ain’t playing

March 18, 2010

Lamont Dozier is one of those cats that had a hand in many of the great songs that you will know from the 60s and 70s.  Hard working like James Brown, with studio sense like Isaac Hayes and as funky as Prince when he wanted to be.  Lamont could also turn out a soul lyric or ballad like Solomon Burke or Sam Cooke.

His Why Can’t We Be Lovers is one of my all time favourite tracks.  It was a huge end of the night record in London in the 80s.  I am (of course…) too young to know that but many years ago I was playing the album that track is from to my friend Keir.  I was excited over another track on the album.  Then Keir turned the record over and said ‘Listen to this one’.

So today’s track is kind of in that style.  A little less needy on this track from 1981.  Sounds like LD has grown up a bit and is ready to settle down.  No more loving and leaving.  And he ain’t playing.
