Gato Barbieri is an Argentine sax player who travelled the US and Europe in the ’60s playing with Jim Hall, Don Cherry and others and schooled himself in the Sonny Rollins style. When he struck out on his own he fused his South American “Third World” sounds with the Gospel, RnB and Jazz flavours he picked up on his travels.
I never see many DJs write or talk about him, but all of his Flying Dutchman* imprint albums are essential if you ask me. If you like sax in the style of Coltrane or Pharoah Sanders you should put Barbieri on your radar.
*Bascially all Flying Dutchman records are essential in one way or another…
