besame mucho

November 15, 2007

I was in a record store in Notting Hill a few weeks ago, and there was this pile of twenty or more 10″ Latin albums. They were all from the ’40s and ’50s. The covers were amazing, graphically speaking. I asked whether they were expensive, and got a disinterested answer along the lines of ‘No-one wants that kind of stuff anymore…’

So I made an offer on the lot. Flamenco, Bolero, Salsa, the lot.

Getting them home I found some of them unplayable, the music was choked with hiss. But as soon as I dropped the needle on this, the first track on the album, I knew buying the whole lot was worthwhile.

I’ve since found that Trio Los Panchos were big back in the day and some of the surviving members still tour Puerto Rico and Latin America.

And, on top of all that, this track fits the week’s theme too…
