brothers on the side : terry’s musical life
December 10, 2007
Ok, so kicking off my new series Brothers On The Side we have the very wonderful, knowledgeable, gracious, and brave T.M.L. …

BACK TO BASICS
T.M.L. (aka Terry’s Musical Life)
CONTRIBUTORS:
Just Me.
DATE OF FIRST POST?
December 2, 2006 (I’m a year old!) It was a post about a mix CD I made for a friend.
HOW OFTEN DO YOU POST?
I try to post a few times a week. Blogging has a momentum to it, if you’re on a roll it’s easy. If you stop for a few days, it can be hard to get back into the swing of things. So I try to stay on top of it.
WHAT WOULD MAKE YOU STOP THE BLOG?
If I got in any trouble from record labels. That would definitely make me think twice about posting again. Hopefully that won’t happen though. I try to only post old, out of print stuff.
HYPE MACHINE OR EL.BOWS?
I tend to use Hype Machine when my son, who is 9, wants some indie dance or rock track he’s heard on a snowboarding video. I find Google’s blog search to be better for the rare stuff (old italo, disco, folk and prog) that I’m interested in. What’s this Elbo.ws thing? (he says, hopelessly out of touch….)
BLOGS IN THE KEY OF LIFE
WHAT IS BEHIND YOUR BLOG NAME?
My name is Terry, these are the songs that are a part of my life. Musical or not.
THE BLOG IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN?
Sitting around, doing nothing I s’pose.
THE BLOG IS LESS IMPORTANT THAN?
Snowboarding in Winter. Baseball in Spring, Summer and Fall.
A POST YOU ARE DAMN PROUD OF?
Okay, sorta bizarre, but I wrote a review of a “Weird” Al Yankovic concert I saw with my son in the sleepy town of Yakima, Washington at a State Fair. It was something I was totally dreading, but I ended up having a really great time with him and we were able to bond pretty tight over it. It also brought up memories of visiting family in the region and apple picking every fall. Blah, blah, blah. I got some great feedback from all over the place about it.
WHY MP3S, AND WHY NOW?
Well, I suppose it’s because MP3’s are easy. Pity about the sound quality though. And Why Now? MP3 blogs are so much better than the old Napster, in a way, because you not only get to hear the track, you get a review or take on it. I have a lot of crap on my computer, but the stuff I tend to go back to are the tracks that were “sold” to me through good writing and reviews.
WHAT BAND OR PRODUCER IS REALLY DOING IT FOR YOU RIGHT NOW?
Lindstrom. He’s been doing it for me for a couple of years now. The man is just unstoppable. Locally (here in Seattle) TJ Gorton (aka American Athlete) who I DJ with on occasion has been putting out really interesting singles on his Beat Freeze label. His track “Jane Fonda” just came on my iPod on shuffle the other day and I was all, “Damn, this track is fine! Jesus TJ!” It helps that he’s one of the sweetest guys on earth.
OTHER THAN LIKING THEIR TRACK WHAT WOULD A BAND OR LABEL HAVE TO GIVE YOU TO MAKE YOU POST ON THEM?
Let me and my buddy Sean Wolcott do a remix!
IF YOU COULD GET ANY WRITER OR MUSIC EVENT EXCLUSIVE FOR YOUR BLOG, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
I would love a sit down chat/interview with Sasha Frere-Jones. He says some super retarded stuff, doesn’t back it up with examples, then ignores facts presented to him. I think he’s a really irresponsible/ignorant critic. He selectively uses history/culture as a wedge that pulls people apart, instead of a wedge that can hold open a door to expand a view. And he writes for the frigging New Yorker for chrissake!
THREE IS THE MAGIC NUMBER
3 BLOGS THAT YOU RECOMMEND / INSPIRED YOU TO START:
Ack! Just 3?!?!
American Athlete is always an inspiration.
The Red Room is Sean Wolcott’s blog, full of all manner of rare electro, Disco and Italo. Sean is an amazing musician with a killer collection of old synths. He’s working on some material at the moment that is going to rock you all! Look out for The Fascination Movement!
Disco Delivery It would be wrong of me to ignore this influential, well researched and detailed blog. Tommy really helped me get started blogging by helping me out with the technical end of things. He’s a great guy, who I hope to party with in the future!
3 DESERT ISLAND BOOKS:
A Suitable Boy by Vikram Seth

Something by Joan Baez.
Something by Mike Oldfield (pre 1978)
DJ I-F’s Mixed Up In The Hague vols. 1 and 2
3 PEOPLE YOU REALLY HOPE WILL READ YOUR BLOG:

3 PEOPLE YOU HOPE WILL NEVER READ YOUR BLOG:
The heads of the 3 biggest major labels.
AND FINALLY
A TRACK FOR THE READERS OF INNERSOUNDS…
I think this could be my theme song. Just some great Can-Con Disco with Vocoder and a killer bridge and great guitar licks. Equal parts disco dancing and air guitar when played out. C’mon Todd Terje, you know you want to re-edit….
Night Road – Get Down (Edit)
