brothers on the side…groovin’ you
February 7, 2008
Groovin’ You is the blog run by Acid Bear Boy (seen below, earlier today) I found it quite by accident and immediately felt a kinship with the music he was pushing.
Again, across the board selections, with the empahsis on quality and not hit counts. ABB digs his own furrow, in his own time, on his own ground. And the musical-farmer in me likes that – and I hope you will too.
BACK TO BASICS
BLOG NAME:
CONTRIBUTORS:
The original team was made up of about seven people from the music folder on www.rllmuk.com, a videogame forum with a strong community outside of videogame discussion. I asked a few of my favourite posters if they were interested in doing a blog with me, as I was struggling on my own. Most said yes, about half of them posted and now it’s mainly just me, although Ben and Paul are still ‘on the books’.
DATE OF FIRST POST?
9th September 2006
HOW OFTEN DO YOU POST?
It varies from month to month, but probably averages about once a week.
WHAT WOULD MAKE YOU STOP THE BLOG?
I’ll be doing some travelling in 2008 so I might start blogging about life rather than music while I’m on the road.
HYPE MACHINE OR EL.BOWS?
I remember registering with both at the start but I’ve never visited Elbow since. I do use Hype Machine once in a while to listen to recommendations and we get quite a lot of hits via them so I try to make sure the mp3 tags are picked up.
BLOGS IN THE KEY OF LIFE
WHAT IS BEHIND YOUR BLOG NAME?
We needed a name that was suitable for the music we planned to post. We also needed a URL that was available on Google Blogger. “Electric Soul” was my first choice but it was already taken. “Groovin’ You” was the next best thing.
THE BLOG IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN?
I don’t really consider the blog itself to be hugely important. The act of finding, listening and sharing music with like-minded people is definitely one of the most important things in my life though. I’d never stop doing it, even if the internet vanished.
THE BLOG IS LESS IMPORTANT THAN?
Most things to be honest. My friends outside the internet aren’t really music nerds like me so it’s just a place for me to put stuff out there for people that (hopefully) care.
A POST YOU ARE DAMN PROUD OF?
The Willy Baxter one really stands out. I loved his tunes when I first heard them and got chatting to him through Myspace. Later I posted some tracks over on 24:Hours, one of which ended up getting signed and released as a single in 2007. Looking forward to hearing some new stuff from him in 2008 actually.
WHY MP3S, AND WHY NOW?
Before mp3’s, if you heard a good song you’d play it to your friends or make them a cassette or burn them a cdr (depending on how old you were). Mp3’s are the next level; they’re just a more convenient way to share music with others. That’s the positive side of the equation but unfortunately the ease of sharing an mp3 file means it’s a lot harder for artists to get people to buy their work. I really make an effort to buy all the good music I hear but unfortunately my love for music is far deeper than my pockets!
WHAT BAND OR PRODUCER IS REALLY DOING IT FOR YOU RIGHT NOW?
Legowelt is the first name that popped into my head. All of his music is so raw and full of energy. I’ve gotten into a lot of his stuff over the last 12 months, from dusty old ambient synthesizer soundscapes to full on jacking techno. Johnny Jewel has a great sound going on with Glass Candy and Chromatics at the moment. I’ve got to mention Morgan Geist too; the latest Metro Area EP blew my mind. His work with Kelley Polar was also fantastic – can’t wait to hear the new LP in 2008.
OTHER THAN LIKING THEIR TRACK WHAT WOULD A BAND OR LABEL HAVE TO GIVE YOU TO MAKE YOU POST ON THEM?
Groovin’ You is free from any artist or label involvement. I just post whatever I’m enjoying. I also write for 24:Hours, where we only post stuff with permission. We get sent some promos and tracks from new artists, but I still don’t post anything I’m not into.
THREE IS THE MAGIC NUMBER
3 BLOGS THAT YOU RECOMMEND / INSPIRED YOU TO START:
headphonesex
allsexistape
24:Hours
were the first blogs I started regularly reading and commenting. Fairly soon after that I decided to start my own and then another 6 months or so later Groovin You was born. Right now, I don’t really follow too many blogs. It got to the point where there were far too many good blogs and I was trying to listen to everything, meaning I never listened to anything properly. I dig out the bookmarks once in a while when I’m in need of some new sounds.
3 DESERT ISLAND BOOKS:
I’ve only ever read about 3 books by choice so I’ll pass.
3 DESERT ISLAND RECORDS:
The answers to this change on a weekly basis, today:
Goldie – Timeless (single disc version)
Jan Jelinek – Loop-Finding-Jazz-Records
Kelley Polar – Love Songs of the Hanging Garden
The thought of having just three albums to listen to, forever, really scares me. I think I’d prefer to have none and just hum tunes to myself from memory.
3 PEOPLE YOU REALLY HOPE WILL READ YOUR BLOG:
People who care about the how, who, what, where, when and why of music. People who read the text and don’t just download the tracks. People who comment, I really like people who interact with the blog. Leave more comments!!
3 PEOPLE YOU HOPE WILL NEVER READ YOUR BLOG:
I’m a lover, not a hater.
AND FINALLY
A TRACK FOR THE READERS OF INNERSOUNDS…
Mandre – Solar Flight (Opus I)
Those chords, that synth, the bass, the beat, that breakdown and the way the bridge works its way back to the hook. Totally amazing music, the likes of which I’d never heard before.
