brothers on the side…old is the new neu
December 27, 2007
When I first stumbled across Old is the New Neu, I was immediately drawn in by the choice writing (I’m a sucker for good writing - even though I never work hard enough on my own) and credible selections. I mean that’s what we ask of a blog really isn’t it? Just two simple things. To funnel the entire cultural history of the World into a few paragraphs and do it with some wit.
No, wait three things - and to do it at least five time a week so we don’t feel too trapped at work.
OitNN does this and so much more. I felt an immediate kinship with the blog, and a glowing jealousy that I hadn’t felt since…what me? Jealous? …
It was wanting to know more about the blog and its author, and then to spread that knowledge to my readers, that gave me the idea for this crazy series (which has taken on a life of its own!). Hope you enjoy the blog as much as I do…
BACK TO BASICS
BLOG NAME:
CONTRIBUTORS:
Me, Myself and I.
DATE OF FIRST POST?
Way back in October this year, so pretty new still.
HOW OFTEN DO YOU POST?
Four or five times a week, ideally.
WHAT WOULD MAKE YOU STOP THE BLOG?
Not sure yet.
HYPE MACHINE OR EL.BOWS?
Hype.
BLOGS IN THE KEY OF LIFE
WHAT IS BEHIND YOUR BLOG NAME?
The blog is a mix of music, film, odds and ends, some old, some new, stuff that gets me excited so I hope other people will also enjoy, from mainstream stuff to quite niche. The title is just about how a record or film from the past can be just as exciting as something that’s brand new if it’s the fist time you’ve found it. There’s so much great obscure stuff out there from the past that gets heard because of some of the blogs around. There’s always room for a Krautrock reference as well.
THE BLOG IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN?
I’m not yet sure of its greater significance.
THE BLOG IS LESS IMPORTANT THAN?
Not leaving your TV on standby.
A POST YOU ARE DAMN PROUD OF?
Haven’t got there yet. I’ll let others be the judge of that.
WHAT BAND OR PRODUCER IS REALLY DOING IT FOR YOU RIGHT NOW?
Mathew Dear’s had a good year, Asa Breed is great, kind of minimal goes pop. Burial’s album was very dark, like a Massive Attack record, taking dubstep somewhere interesting. Prins Thomas continues to do great things both producing and dj’ing, Todd Terje seems capable of remixing anything to superior effect.
OTHER THAN LIKING THEIR TRACK WHAT WOULD A BAND OR LABEL HAVE TO GIVE YOU TO MAKE YOU POST ON THEM?
A bottle of rum or just good music. Any extra information helps as well.
IF YOU COULD GET ANY WRITER OR MUSIC EVENT EXCLUSIVE FOR YOUR BLOG, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
Pink Floyd playing in a small venue, with original sixties visuals. Daft Punk at my house.
THREE IS THE MAGIC NUMBER
3 BLOGS THAT YOU RECOMMEND / INSPIRED YOU TO START:
Other than Innersounds
Donnaslut: A great collection of obscure gems, like rooting round in a charity shop that’s not had all the best records bought up. It’s got a nice simple layout that lets the record covers do the talking.
Motel De Moka: Always beautifully presented, great images, interesting thoughts and themes, a fantastic source of music old and new.
Voodoo Funk: Something different, as much a travel blog as a music one. Crate digging soul funk and afro on the West Coast of Africa. Music you’re unlikely to hear anywhere else.
3 DESERT ISLAND BOOKS:
The Beach-Garland
Lord of the Flies-Golding
Robinson Crusoe-Dafoe
3 DESERT ISLAND RECORDS:
The Specials - ‘Message To Rudy’
David Bowie - ‘Heroes’
Art Of Noise - ‘Moments In Love’ (I’m hoping for some nice sunsets on the island).
3 PEOPLE YOU REALLY HOPE WILL READ YOUR BLOG:
All readers are equal.
3 PEOPLE YOU HOPE WILL NEVER READ YOUR BLOG:
Everyone is welcome.
AND FINALLY
A TRACK FOR THE READERS OF INNERSOUNDS…
Something that crosses the film and music divide and has some credibility. It was neck and neck between Moroder’s theme to A Neverending Story and this…. Thankfully Bernard Herrmann’s theme to Taxi Driver won out. It was Herrmann’s last work, a great jazz score to one of Scorsese’s best. With the film it works perfectly but it’s too good a piece of music not to have a place in your record collection as well.
Bernard Hermann - Theme From Taxi Driver
