brothers on the side…out there a minute
March 31, 2009
Out There A Minute has been a blog brother for quite some time now. Uploading right-minded mixes and linking to the coolest Youtube videos. Frodo’s vision of music takes in everything from rhythmic House styles and Daniel Wang Disco; to Japanese Minimalism and future-freak free Jazz.
One of his answers to a question below says a lot about his deep understanding of what a music blog is, how it can work, and how ripples of information can cross geographical and generational boundaries and become influences. When asked who he would like to think might read his blog, he hoped it would be ‘an open minded and curious 14 year old who had just smoked his first spliff’. That 14 year old would have a hell of a ride, and might just end up ‘out there a minute’…

Wow, that’s great. You couldn’t have pointed out those to me earlier?
BLOGS IN THE KEY OF LIFE
WHAT IS BEHIND YOUR BLOG NAME?
First off, it’s the title of an overlooked, and in my view brilliant album by Herman Sonny Blount, aka Sun Ra, one of the most controversial and innovative musicians of the 20th century.
Besides surrounding his adventurous music with costumes and basing it on mythology that both looked backward toward ancient Egypt and forward into science fiction, he experimented with primitive electric keyboards, and played free long before the avant-garde got established.
Secondly, I guess it could be a pseudo-intellectual metaphor for the insignificance of human existence.
THE BLOG IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN?
Sleep, obviously.
THE BLOG IS LESS IMPORTANT THAN?
A bottle of Chateau Lafite 1787 Bordeaux.
A POST YOU ARE DAMN PROUD OF?
Working on that one.
WHY MP3S, AND WHY NOW?
Besides it being environmentally friendly [no plastic, no paper], for me personally it has opened a whole new musical world since MP3’s were first introduced, as well as that it has given me total freedom of what I listen to and who I share it with.
That being said, as the internet keeps getting more advanced and faster, MP3’s will probably evolve into just being a word on Wikipedia.
WHAT BAND OR PRODUCER IS REALLY DOING IT FOR YOU RIGHT NOW?
Theo Parrish, To Rococo Rot, Art Ensemble Of Chicago.
OTHER THAN LIKING THEIR TRACK WHAT WOULD A BAND OR LABEL HAVE TO GIVE YOU TO MAKE YOU POST ON THEM?
Half.
IF YOU COULD GET ANY WRITER OR MUSIC EVENT EXCLUSIVE FOR YOUR BLOG, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
If it wasn’t too late, Hunter S.Thompson.

AND FINALLY
A TRACK FOR THE READERS OF INNERSOUNDS…
The track I’ve chosen for you, embodies and translates as everything that is important to me musically. For me, playing or listening to jazz is the closest any human being will ever come to actually physically being able to fly, free, out there a minute, communicating on a level where words are superfluous, and thoughts and visuals are formed unconsciously through instinct.
Master trumpeter Marcus Belgrave’s ‘Space Odyssey’ is sometimes funky, spacy, or swinging, but always potent. Enjoy.
