free as the morning sun
November 27, 2007

I have been home alone for the last couple of nights, and much as I love my family, it has been awesome. Most of my records are in my son’s room, so it was a perfect night for digging.
Simple pleasures…
So I came across this Santana record from ’79 when he was in his spiritual Devadip stage. I loved this record a few years ago and hadn’t seen it since two house moves ago.
The track I love on it is ‘Life Is Just A Passing Parade’ which my friend Brubekk got all excited about; he has been wanting to edit that for a while now, only I couldn’t find it.
So I pulled the record to listen again to ‘Parade’ and I noticed the track ‘Free As The Morning Sun’.
Back nearer the millennium than now, a british nu-jazz group dropped a track called ‘Free As The Morning Sun’ and it was played all over London. DJs that don’t ‘do’ jazz used to play it, which is saying something. And I always thought it was an original composition, and one of the reasons why I hyped it to people.
And all along I had the OG sitting on my shelves at home, going unnoticed and unloved.
Time to rectify. Here’s the original, from Devadip, from a brilliant album Oneness: Silver Dreams, Golden Realities.

Nice to hear the original.
I have the Mr Hermano version which is also rather tasty.
Howdy Jez. Just wanted to stop for a second to say thanks and please keep it up in the midst of my mad downloading. You’ve got a beautiful thing going. And I totally hear you on the night-without-wife-and-child(ren) = turntable gets no rest. Simple pleasures to be sure.
sweeeet! this is a great track and brought back a lotta memories. i think i remember that remix of this song you referred to – I think Dimitri from Paris played it a lot. Post the edit from your friend Brubekk when its done – i’m stoked to check it out!
yes agreed – wanna hear that edit maestro, also just wanted to mention – sheez i love this track, both the original and the mr hermano (which was one of my first posts – i still play that version and dropped on a recent radio show and have to say, even though i do like a bit of nu jazz here and there, that thing crosses boundaries like a frieght train.. needless to say carlos’ is probably better – love your taste in tunes Jez..
