instant vintage

October 23, 2007

I was in the DJ box when Gilles Peterson first dropped this remix. It was 12 minutes or so long but felt so much longer – in a good way. A really good way. It was a CDR and when Gilles took it out I stared in the half-dark at the scribbled email address. I burned the address into my memory and emailed the producer the next day.

At the time the team behind Yam Who were a big secret. People knew of someone who knew one of them, but their identity was hidden. And for that reason Mr Who thanked me for my interest, but said there were only 3 copies of the CDR in existence, and I wasn’t going to be getting one…

Forward a few years and redits of major label artists are everywhere. Re-edit producers put their name out there, fishing for a major label release or remix project. Things are very different out there now.

But there will always be this track.

It did finally get a vinyl release, but in a shortened 6 minute version, that was just the longer track faded in the middle. Very disappointing. Eventually though I managed to get a copy of the original CDR version, the long version. And here it is now, courtesy of Tim H, here’s one for your headphones.

Ezy – yeah it’s difficult to find tracks that haven’t been blogged already! Then someone else gets there first…Eu sou pesaroso!

Cubik – Thank goodness for the internet, I wouldn’t have tracked this down by old school methods alone.

Sherman – Now you can play the instrumental for 6 minutes…and then the 12 minute edit. Time for two cigarettes and a quick read of the Sports pages…:)

All – thanks for the comments everyone.
