The Redbull Music Academy London 2010 has just closed up shop. I visited the Academy site for a tour and went to some of the gigs that were put on around the city. This year’s participants were crazy fortunate to have some really interesting “lecturers”. All the sessions were filmed and have been archived online, and I have been working my way through the videos. Pick of the bunch for me were Moodymann, Joe Boyd, Dam Funk and Trevor Jackson. Though to be honest I have not seen them all…Still on my ‘to be watched’ list – Mark Ronson, Gabriel Roth, Jay Electronica and Henrik Schwarz.
Moodymann is awesome in his chat to the folk who turned up, giving away CDs and T-shirts (the only one who brought stuff for the room) and speaking honestly about the music he makes and the opinions he holds. One of the things he mentions is that he can never decide on which version of a track is the best one, so often the US release of a track will be slightly different from the Japan one or whatever, with up to four different versions floating around on different pressings. He said no-one has yet put this together and challenged him on it. And I’m not going to say I did notice, but Black Mahogany – the 12″ – was a crazy rare record with a 20 minute version of the track that people wanted to spend a lot of money on. For me and my crew though it was this, the shorter, album version that was much stronger and the better club record.
So here it is.
If you are in any way interested in music or its production do check out the videos here. Just finished watching the Trevor Jackson one, and I totally recommend it.
