sideburn soul

January 16, 2009

I just found this mix on CD digging around this morning, not sure if I have ever posted it before? I vaguely remember making this at our old place – so at least 4 years ago, possibly more? The theme of it was heavy tracks from the mid ’70s, when both rock and soul artists were growing their hair, their gut and their sideburns. I was really getting into low-slung rock funk at the time.

Listening back to the mix with a bit of perspective the first part blends really well and sets a nice tone, not so sure the second half works so well, but all my mixes get lost in the middle. It’s turning into a trademark.

Anyway, I’ll move it to the mix page later, but for now, enjoy…

Jez Proctor – Sideburn Soul

Marvin Gaye – Is That Enough?
Rasputin’s Stash – Ooh Baby
Leo’s Sunship – Give Me The Sunshine (Instrumental)
Leo’s Sunship – Give Me The Sunshine (Vocal)
Bee Gees – Love You Inside & Out
Ace – I See No Future In Your Eyes
Antonio Carlos Jobim – Captain Bacardi
Kenny Rogers – Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)
America – Horse With No Name
Morgana King – Where Am I Going?
Doris Troy – Stretchin’ Out
Marlena Shaw – Lovin’ You Was Like A Party
Donny & Roberta – Where Is The Love?

    Sweet mix. Thanks a lot.

When you think about it, that fur coat, mid-seventies sound (nailed shut by The Eagles) was when the music drug scene shifted away from weed towards cocaine (a very euphoric but isolating drug). The affect becomes less about a Grateful Dead communal experience and more about instant gratification . You can hear it in the music, that “we’re here for a good time, not a long time” vibe.

I think you are spot on the money there Ed. Big change of scene when there was a change in the pharmacuticals.

Mike – The track is by Wajeed there was an Ep with about 4 Marvin tracks that had been Wajeed-ified. Good looking out.

Thanks for dropping in with comments.

    Peace.
