sisters on the side…one step to soul steppin’
January 23, 2008
It’s not just ‘brothers’ who have the monopoly on good tunes and good taste, as MissT proves with her blog. Posts are few on the ground at the moment, but the selections are pure quality. Music from a personal point of view. The way it should be. Thanks to T for the low down…

BACK TO BASICS
BLOG NAME:
One Step to Soul Steppin’ (Formally My Diversions)
CONTRIBUTORS:
MissT (myself)
DATE OF FIRST POST?
May 2007
HOW OFTEN DO YOU POST?
Not often enough, at this rate maybe once a month!
WHAT WOULD MAKE YOU STOP THE BLOG?
Something really BIG! Maybe legal issues.
HYPE MACHINE OR EL.BOWS?
Hype Machine.
BLOGS IN THE KEY OF LIFE
WHAT IS BEHIND YOUR BLOG NAME?
Well it was called My Diversions originally because it was the name of my student radio show, but then I stopped doing that so needed a name change. And well it is always for me to do with soul, and it just flowed right in the end. What it means? Whatever you want it to!
THE BLOG IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN?
At times my degree. Listening to boring, commercial radio.
THE BLOG IS LESS IMPORTANT THAN?
My family (dogs included) and playing records.
A POST YOU ARE DAMN PROUD OF?
I haven’t done many as I’m a newbie, but I suppose my post on my first ever mix. It’s short and does what it should, but it was a real proud moment to be confident and pleased enough to put a mix up.
WHY MP3S, AND WHY NOW?
Quick and accessible. Easy to exchange around the world, showcase what you want. Reflects society really, everything must be consumed now – mp3s fit that bill. Although I take after my Dad, I still want records (and those evil cd’s) to actually hold!
WHAT BAND OR PRODUCER IS REALLY DOING IT FOR YOU RIGHT NOW?
Band most probably Pimps of Joytime, and producer Will Quantic, Dimitri or Kero One. Of course this regularly changes and under pressure I can’t remember what I want to!
OTHER THAN LIKING THEIR TRACK WHAT WOULD A BAND OR LABEL HAVE TO GIVE YOU TO MAKE YOU POST ON THEM?
Ha! Just knowing my blog would be enough. That and maybe a track exclusive if its someone I really love.
IF YOU COULD GET ANY WRITER OR MUSIC EVENT EXCLUSIVE FOR YOUR BLOG, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
If ever there was to be one, the next single for Bah Samba (with Alice Russell), or an Alice Russell, or Jennifer Holliday exclusive. Oh and finding that ‘mythical’ final album/orchestration Donny Hathaway was writing before he died.
THREE IS THE MAGIC NUMBER
3 BLOGS THAT YOU RECOMMEND / INSPIRED YOU TO START:
(Not including Innersounds as that’s a given!) CubikMusik, Souled On and American Athlete.
3 DESERT ISLAND BOOKS:
This is pretty hard for an Eng Lit undergrad! But in no order:
Compete Volume of Freud
Gabriel Garcia Marquez – Love In The Time of Cholera (or 100 Years…)
Jonathan Lethem – Fortress of Solitude
3 DESERT ISLAND RECORDS:
Incredibly hard!
Donny Hathaway – These Songs For You (Live)
Bah Samba – Bah Samba
And one of my Dad’s old mix tapes (got tunes that bring back memories right!)
3 PEOPLE YOU REALLY HOPE WILL READ YOUR BLOG:
Gilles P (it does say I can hope!). Music editor for a quality mag/paper. A collective ‘everyone’!
3 PEOPLE YOU HOPE WILL NEVER READ YOUR BLOG:
I don’t think I’m in the position to turn people away haha! I don’t know, if I wrote a scathing review of someone maybe then…
AND FINALLY
A TRACK FOR THE READERS OF INNERSOUNDS…
Luther Vandross – Never Too Much
I was going to post a track that I really dig now, but when I thought about it without this track I wouldn’t be into the music I am. I can honestly say this is the first piece of music I remember from being a child, I was only about 3 and not that it was released then, more that it was a fav in the house. My Dad was a DJ from the age of 14 (none of this superstar malarkey) but around the pubs and clubs and all the music he bought and played was soul, funk, r&b, jazz, disco. And his collection became mine simple as. I can play this track on repeat all day it is stunningly produced, from the guitar at the beginning to the very end. I love it and I love the memory that comes with it – I don’t care how many times ‘compilation’ radio stations play it. Luther is mine ![]()
