swingers
October 30, 2007

Swingers is one of the greatest movies ever made. Bar none.
Godfather? Slow wedding scene - yawn. Star Wars? Men in fancy dress - get out of here. 2001? Apocalypse Now? Where are the laughs?
No, hands down Swingers wins it. At least for today. And one of the best scenes, in the current best movie of the day, is when the ‘guy-behind-the-guy-behind-the-guy’ and his best friend take two Vegas waitresses back to their trailer, to help Mikey get over the loss of his girlfriend.
That scene was mostly improvised and Vince Vaughn’s whole speech about the movie audition is genius.
Even more genius is the music in the background. The raunchy sex kitten guitar track in the background. So perfect for that scene it hurts. And I never noticed it in the million times I watched the movie. It just went straight into sub-concious storage.
And then I was listening to the Greatest Hits of Heart [don’t ask] and I couldn’t place this song…
Was it that Sean P edit on Tirk? Was it some Idjut Boys end of the night track? A Unabombers warm-up track? Something from Prince Language and his No Comprendo series?
Or was it just good old Swingers…the greatest movie of the day?
Heart - Magic Man
(And check for the cosmic synths and breakdown around the halfway point…)

I’ve never actually gotten round to seeing it, but apprently it features a bar that I had some swing-dancing lessons in LA in preparation for the subsequent live swing band playing at my friends wedding over there.
I knew I had availed myself far too heavily of the free bar when I found myself busting some quite energetic moves on the dance floor with my friends quite austere and very beautiful Chinese mother who I had always been very intimidated by since the age of 12. Heading home I was leaning out of the car window being sick with one of the bridesmaids sat on my lap, and still later the bride and groom offered to just leave me on the floor of the bathroom of their honeymoon suite as I was so wasted when everyone else was leaving.
I’ve been toying with trying to figure out a good way to edit this track but I’m not convinced it’ll do it any good. One of my all time faves.
Good lookin’ out!

KK - Yeah I forgot to mention the excellent swing-time dance music and moves of the film. Good to hear you made sure people weren’t talking about the boring old bride and groom the next day!
AA - I’ve thought of editing this tune too, just taking the synths on a ride…for about 15 minutes. But, you’re right, it doesn’t really need it.
