watergate blues

November 22, 2007

We all know History is a cycle. So even though a few names and places might need updating, this live recording of griot Scott-Heron at work is an awesome indictment of what we call politics.

Even better than the words, the music, the crowd or the point; is the calm and cool with which he delivers his words. Starting again at one point when he fluffs a difficult but important line.

Every word to be heard clearly.

A poetic legend. His words (and delivery of) are great. Mixed with a jazz vibe even better.

On the B side of his 1990 track “Space Shuttle” is a version of “War Is Very Ugly” which uses Larry Heards (Mr Fingers) “Can You Feel It” house backing track. I have never heard anyone play it but in my ears it’s a classic.
